When it comes to gender equality, Serena Williams has always been vocal about her stance. The 22-time Grand Slam champion is considered one of the greatest athletes alive yet is often referred to as “the best ‘female’ tennis player in the world,” she revealed in an Instagram post—and, quite frankly, she’s not happy about it.
“Do they say LeBron is one of the world’s best male athletes? Is Tiger? Federer? Why not? They are certainly not female. We should never let this go unchallenged,” she continued.
The tennis star’s feminist statement comes at a time when women feel that their path to gender equality is being compromised. Since Election Day, conversations have opened up about equal pay and women’s empowerment, and Serena’s message inspires “all young women out there to push for greatness and follow their dreams with steadfast resilience.” How’s that for some much-needed Monday motivation?
